Increase your Immune System

Cold & Flu season is here and now more than ever, we should all increase our immune system.  Especially if you are stressed, older (senior citizen) and or have a weakened immune system.  So best way to get our immune system up is to increase our intake of natural antioxidants found in itrus fruits, like orange, lemon, grapefruit and berries such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, acai, pomegranate are high in antioxidants. Additionally, antioxidants are found in foods such as grapes, nuts and dark green vegetables such as spinach, leek, chard and kale. Yellow and orange vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes and fruits such as butternut and acorn squash are rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A and C. Pumpkin, papaya, guava and cantaloupe are also rich in antioxidants.  Also if you can’t get enough through your diet, you should take supplements.   There are herbs such as Echinacea and golden seal that are great immune boosters.  Probiotics for your intestinal immune system is extremely important.

Stress is the main reason why our immune system is diminished so learning to manage, or limit your stress is very important through meditation, yoga, Thai chi, etc…  There are also supplements that can nourish your adrenal glands.  You should get lots of rest and sleep, be positive and live a balanced lifestyle, this will definitely help you increase your immune system.

By the way, there is no real cure for the common cold, but peppermint is one of our best herbs that help alleviate cold symptoms, so make sure to drink a lot of peppermint tea!  Ginger, lemon and honey make a great throat and cough reliever.

Be careful on over supplementing or taking herbs as they are medicinal and can have an interaction with your body chemistry.  So please go see a professional to get on the right supplements for you!
